Very few English speaking or writing journalists have been following the recent strike dispute in Panama. The strike has paralyzed the border between Sixaola, Costa Rica, and Changuinola Panama. Reports say that up to 5000 banana plantation workers are striking against law 30,
spraying a marsh to control mosquitoes will cause trace amounts of DDT to accumulate in the cells of microscopic aquatic organisms, the plankton, in the marsh.
In feeding on the plankton, filter-feeders, like clams and some fish, harvest DDT as well as food. (Concentrations of DDT 10 times greater than those in the plankton have been measured in clams.)
Leave by bus to explore the upper regions of the Sixaola River Valley. This kayak trip will start in Suretka and continue down to the border town of Sixaola. During the trip we will be scouting future test sites, potential runoff areas, and looking for wildlife. This part of the river is little explored by outsiders, and we are sure to see wildlife throughout our trip!
