Things are moving along in the fight against the Caribbean Lionfish invasion. Our contact with the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) is working hard to create a national media campaign to raise awareness of the growing impact of this invasive species.
Recent talks point to sometime in early to mid January as the target date of commercial lionfish shipments. With all the hype on twitter, and the viral spreading of the lionfish story, it is important for restaurants, grocery stores, and the consumer themselves to be aware that FDA safe handling procedures should be followed by exporters, importers, and lionfish hunters alike.
The Florida International Teaching Zoo, and Project Green Jungle have been working with the NOAA and various sustainable seafood wholesalers since the beginning. We are committed to providing one of the best tasting fishes we have ever had in a safe and healthy way. In fact, we are now working with various scientists (from the NOAA and other oganizations) on techniques to flash freeze and ship the fish in the safest, quickest way possible to give you, the end consumer, a tasty, delicacy to enjoy. The best thing about enjoying lionfish from us in particular, is knowing your purchase directly conserves the Caribbean Reefs.
By conservation, we are not just talking about elimination of an invasive species, Project Green Jungle funds and conducts surveys with the revenues generated from Lionfish sales.
Research with the NOAA has also started to narrow down the wholesale and retail prices expected for the lionfish, and we are confident a fair market value will be reached within the next few months.
In the meantime, if your anywhere in the water on the Eastern Seaboard, Gulf of Mexico, or Caribbean and see a lionfish, don’t forget to report your sitings to the NOAA. Contact information is in the photo to the left.
If your interested in assisting Project Green Jungle, and the NOAA, we are looking for both commercial and individual sponsors. We estimate that it will cost our organization $5000.00 to get our lionfish project off the ground. Once we are actively shipping the fish, your one time donation will turn into a renewable income source to fund our projects and protect reefs throughout the Caribbean!
Make a difference now!
