Leafcutter Ants in Costa Rica

Here is some video of Leafcutter Ants taken from Hitoy Cerere Biological Reserve.
Leafcutter ants are one of those animals you most assuredly will see while on your visit to Costa Rica. We have seen them all over the country, and are we are always interested in observing the fascinating behavior of these ants.
Most peoople know that leafcutters are a fungus growing type of ant from the tropical Central and South American continents, however it is often lost on how complex and how amazingly large their nests can be. While out in the field, we have seen central nests of 30-40 feet across, with multiple satellite nests radiating out for at least 100 feet or more, making up massive colonies. We have heard of some nests getting up to 250 feet or more counting the smaller radiating mounds. A colony this size would be made up of eight million individuals.
