Bio-surveys

“As we cannot know the reason for a fact before we know the fact, we cannot know what a thing is before we know that it is” – Aristotle.

As the above quote implies, we need to know what is there before we can begin to understand how to manage it.

A biological survey is the starting line in the marathon Project Green Jungle is warming up for in Costa Rica. Our marathon starts in January of 2010, and aims to cover 10′s of thousands of hectares over the next few decades. So far, we have had small excursions of a few participants, hiking short distances, and conducting broad-scoped canvases of the two survey sites.

James and a Mantid Both sites are located in the Talamanca Region of Costa Rica. This region encompasses the southeast portion of the country south from Limon, and East of the Cordillerra de Talamanca mountain range. Within the Talamanca Region there are multiple National Parks, Indigenous Reserves, and Wildlife Refuges.

Our surveys initially are taking place in a SINAC managed reserve known as Hitoy Cerere, and the Indigenous Reserve of the Bribri Indians of Talamanca.

The objectives are simple:

  1. Fill in the Data Gaps
  2. Justify the importance and acknowledge the need for continued protection of Hitoy Cerere Biological Reserve
  3. Prioritize the conservation investments

What kind of data is available?

  • Taxonomic data based on groups
  • New Species
  • Threatened Species
  • Endemic Species
  • Range Extensions
  • Migratory Paths
  • Invasive Species
  • Population Size/Health
  • Ecosystem Health

Through our Integrated Tourism programs, as well as our other revenue generating activities, Project Green Jungle, and the Florida International Teaching Zoo will sustainably utilize the very natural resource we will be studying in order to see our goals to completion.

Our options for 2010 allow you to experience both of these sites in two different capacities. Adventure/Eco responsible tours will focus on the cultural/scientific aspect of these two sites. Our Photographic workshops will focus more on the technical aspect of nature photography. More information to come!

Each of our biosurveys costs a few thousand dollars and we are always looking for supporters that wish to help out.  If you are interested in helping, you can donate securely by entering in an amount below and clicking “Donate.”
