Everyone here at the Florida International Teaching Zoo, and Project Green Jungle would like to wish everyone a happy holidays and a happy new year.  We hope your year was as productive as ours.  In 2009 we had a lot of hurdles to clear to achieve our goals.  In fact, we really had to re-work a lot of our activities in order to keep pace with the changes around us. Even with the economic downturn, the project, and it’s many volunteers were able to conduct activities throughout Talamanca, Costa Rica.  Our water quality tests were so successful that we have many families throughout the... [Read the full story]

When you think of Costa Rica, your mind wanders from world-class sport fishing and pristine beaches; to lush tropical forests with 100 meter tall waterfalls, parrots flying overhead, and toucans and monkeys dropping palm nuts from tree tops. La Marina Zoo

La Marina Zoo

December 28, 2009 · 2 Comments

On the surface, La Marina Zoo is like many other rehab facilities, but a tour by Juan Jose Rojas Alfaro, the director, reveals a level of intricacy belying its humble appearance. Juan Jose took up the reins as the head of this facility inheriting it from his mother and currently operating it with his wife, son and two daughters. The family has a strong vision of what form conservation efforts in this region should take. So far, La Marina has released over 200 deer, dozens of parrots, as well as several Baird’s tapirs into the protected jungle adjacent to the zoo. La Marina Zoo is one the... [Read the full story]

Cahuita National Park

December 31, 2009 · Leave a Comment

photo credit: Armando Maynez One of the best little parks in Costa Rica is on the Caribbean coast, just a short 20 minute bus ride from this little village we call Puerto Viejo. The park is Cahuita National Park, a small but diverse park perfect for hiking, snorkeling or just lounging on the beautiful white or black sand beaches.  The hike through this park is a fairly light one, is approximately 9 km, and can be started either at the main park entrance, near Punta Vargas, or at the beach entrance, located a 5 minute walk from the bus terminal in the town of Cahuita. Along this path you’ll... [Read the full story]
